Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)
A precise description of the company and buyer most likely to buy and stay — the targeting filter that defines who outbound should reach.
An ideal customer profile defines the firmographic and behavioral traits of the accounts a business serves best: industry, size, geography, tech stack, and the trigger events that signal need. It is the filter that keeps prospecting focused, since outbound to the wrong companies wastes the same effort that converts when aimed at the right ones.
A sharp ICP makes list building, enrichment, and messaging far more efficient, because every downstream step inherits the targeting decision. The common failure is an ICP that is too broad or based on hope rather than the data of who actually closes and renews; tightening it against real won-deal patterns lifts reply and conversion rates across the whole funnel.
