Unsubscribe
The mechanism letting an email recipient remove themselves from a list — now a one-click requirement for bulk senders under major-provider rules.
An unsubscribe is the email-specific way a recipient opts out of future messages, traditionally via a link in the footer. Since the 2024 bulk-sender rules from Gmail and Yahoo, list-unsubscribe must be one-click and honored within a short window, making a working, prompt unsubscribe a deliverability requirement rather than a courtesy.
Unsubscribe is a subset of the broader opt-out: it covers email, while opt-out spans SMS STOP requests and verbal phone requests too. Honoring it instantly and feeding it into the suppression list protects sender reputation, because ignored unsubscribes turn into spam complaints that damage inbox placement for every future send.
