Do-Not-Contact List (DNC)

An internal list of people and domains that must never be contacted — opt-outs, competitors, existing customers, and legally off-limits records.

A do-not-contact list is the master exclusion file a business checks before every send: everyone who has opted out, plus competitors, current customers, partners, and any record legally or strategically off-limits. It differs from the federal Do Not Call Registry in that it is the company's own internal suppression list spanning all channels, not a government list specific to telemarketing calls.

Maintaining and honoring a do-not-contact list is both a compliance requirement and a reputation safeguard — contacting someone who opted out invites complaints that damage deliverability and can carry legal penalties. It is enforced as a hard filter applied to every list before outreach, kept current automatically as new opt-outs arrive across email, SMS, and phone.
